Paris crushes ASVEL
In their last league game at the Halle Carpentier, Paris Basketball (92-86) beat ASVEL in front of a packed house.
Paris back in 2nd place
From the outset, the Parisians showed they weren’t there to make up the numbers. A quick 12-5 run forced the Villeurbanne coach to take a time-out, allowing his men to adjust and finish the first quarter ahead. At half-time, it was thanks in particular to a counter-attack by Nadir Hifi, who fed Mehdy Ngouama perfectly in the corner for a 3, and a big dunk by a furious Tyson Ward that the home team went home with a 10-point lead (57-47).
A mental second half
After the break, it was a conquering Paris that took the lead again, with a big 10-0 run to extend the lead to 20 points (67-47). It looked like a quiet end to the game, but ASVEL aren’t a Euroleague team for nothing! Gradually, the visitors clawed their way back to the Parisians’ lead with 7 minutes to go. What happened next? 6 minutes of high tension, with every possession counting! As a man of the big games, Nadir Hifi had donned his “Mr Clutch” costume. A two-point shot in traffic with 1 minute 30 remaining, good collective defense and, at the end of the possession, guess who scored a MONSTEROUS 3-point stepback on Joffrey Lauvergne, who gave him a good 15 centimetres back? Mister NADIR HIFI! (88-84), a controlled finish that ended in a free-throw shootout and a hard-fought victory!
