Biography of Amath M’Baye
Amath M’Baye has had a remarkable career. His career has been marked by self-sacrifice and resilience, taking him from undrafted player to key member of the French national team. Born on 14 December 1989 in Bordeaux, the power forward made his first mark with the orange ball in his hometown. But the Frenchman quickly wanted to see more of the world. After a stint with Le Havre’s youth team, he headed to the United States.
Buoyed by a silver medal at the 2009 Euro U20, the Frenchman left Stoneridge Prep to join the Wyoming Cowboys. Two full seasons averaging 11.3 points allowed him to conclude his NCAA road trip with the Oklahoma Sooners. Alongside Buddy Hield, the centre shone in his final year at university, earning him a place in the All-Big 12 First Team. However, it wasn’t enough to convince the NBA scouts. Never mind. Amath M’baye may not have achieved the famous ‘American dream’, but he did make his professional debut… in Japan!
A 180-degree turn. A risky gamble. Call it what you will. It doesn’t matter, because in the B1 League, Amath M’baye is a star. His incredible 2014-2015 season is proof of that: 23.8 points and 8.4 rebounds on average for a rating of 24.2, player of the month in October, winner of the dunk contest and MVP of the All-Star Game Japan with 44 points! But after three spectacular seasons, the Bordeaux native decided to return to Europe.
More specifically, to Brindisi in Italy. This time, he stepped it up a notch. The LBA Serie A requires a whole new level of play… No problem for our Frenchie, who stepped up his game. His 17.7 points per game average made him his team’s top scorer and helped them to a respectable ninth place in the league.
He then went on to win the double with his new team, EA7 Milano. Along the way, he played around 30 games in his EuroLeague debut. The epilogue to his adventure in Italy took place the following year in Bologna. There too, he performed well before carrying the team on his back (16 points) in the Basketball Champions League final against Iberostar Tenerife.
USA check, Japan check, Italy check… Now it’s time for Turkey! But before this new step, a quick detour to the 2019 World Cup is in order. Firmly established in Vincent Collet’s starting five, Amath M’Baye contributed greatly to this incredible journey, marked by the victory against Team USA in the semi-finals. So it was with a bronze medal around his neck that the power forward started at Pinar Karsiyaka. For three seasons, he participated in the Turkish All-Star Game, reached the BCL final once again and averaged 15 points per game. The centre finally ended his adventure with a championship title in 2023 during his only spell at Anadolu Efes Istanbul.
He was in top form thanks to his latest adventure with Les Bleus at Euro 2022. In the end, he reached the final against Spain. To his already impressive list of achievements, Amath M’Baye added two Russian championships with CSKA Moscow. But in this world tour, one country is missing. And not just any country. Because yes, despite hundreds and hundreds of games, the Bordeaux native has never played… in France!
A championship that our new recruit will discover after signing with Paris Basketball in the summer of 2025.
What role will Amath M’Baye play for Paris Basketball in the 2025-2026 season
Amath M’Baye will inevitably play a key role in the dressing room, acting as a mentor to our younger talents.
