A’ja Wilson : The WNBA’s force to be reckoned with

A’ja Wilson isn’t just a superstar. She is the face of the modern WNBA. The 29-year-old American has racked up a host of individual honours: NCAA Most Outstanding Player, Rookie of the Year, Regular Season MVP (four times in eight seasons, believe it or not…), and Defensive Player of the Year. She is a force to be reckoned with at both ends of the court. In the space of just a few years, the Las Vegas Aces centre has quite simply redefined the standards of the North American league. From her college years to the pinnacle of world basketball, her rise has been meteoric, relentless and undeniable. A look back at the career of a player who makes the extraordinary look ordinary on a daily basis.

The South Carolina phenomenon

The story begins back home in South Carolina. Ranked the nation’s number one high school recruit, A’ja Wilson chose to stay close to home. She joined the University of South Carolina Gamecocks under coach Dawn Staley. The pair made an immediate impact. Wilson established herself as the boss of the paint right from the start. In 2017, she achieved the ultimate accolade: she led her team to their first-ever NCAA championship title. She was unsurprisingly named Most Outstanding Player (MOP) of the Final Four. With 2,389 points and 1,195 rebounds accumulated over four years, she became the best player in the university’s history. A statue in her likeness has even been erected on campus. The message is clear: she is ready for the professional world.

A sensational debut in the WNBA

Unsurprisingly, A’ja Wilson was selected first overall in the 2018 Draft by the Las Vegas Aces. The franchise had just moved from Texas to Nevada and needed a star player. Wilson stepped up straight away. In her rookie season, she averaged 20.7 points and 8.0 rebounds. She was unanimously voted Rookie of the Year. Above all, she transformed a bottom-of-the-table team into a genuine title contender. By 2020, in the Florida ‘bubble’, she clinched her first regular-season MVP trophy.

The Las Vegas dynasty and the all-time records

Becky Hammon’s arrival as head coach in 2022 takes the Aces – and Wilson – to a whole new level. The Las Vegas paint becomes a no-go zone. The team wins the WNBA title in 2022. A’ja secures the individual double: MVP and Defensive Player of the Year. In 2023, they clinch back-to-back titles. The Aces crush the competition and Wilson is named Finals MVP.

But the American doesn’t stop there. Her 2024 and 2025 seasons are nothing short of historic. She strings together a series of unreal performances, smashing the all-time single-season scoring record in 2024. In 2025, she clinches her fourth regular-season MVP title and wins her third WNBA championship, picking up a second Finals MVP title along the way. Her dominance is total, and she is only 29 years old.

Team USA’s steamroller

A’ja Wilson’s influence extends far beyond the confines of the North American league. With the US national team, she is the driving force behind American dominance. She won the World Cups in 2018 and 2022. At the Olympic Games, she is the undisputed linchpin. Gold medallist in Tokyo in 2021, then in Paris in 2024. On French soil, she finished as the competition’s top scorer (18.7 points), rebounder (10.2) and blocker. She dominates FIBA competition with the same ease as she does at club level.

An analysis of her playing style

A’ja Wilson is the ultimate embodiment of the modern two-way player. Offensively, she is an unsolvable puzzle. A left-hander with an imposing height (1.93m), she excels with her back to the basket, displaying footwork of rare fluidity. Her mid-range shot is lethal: if the defence drops back to stop her attacking the basket, she punishes them with surgical precision. Recently, she has even added a reliable three-point shot to her arsenal, making double-teaming a necessity.

At the other end of the court, she is a veritable fortress. A multiple Defensive Player of the Year winner, Wilson is an elite rim protector. Her wingspan, timing of her jump and sense of anticipation allow her to alter or block countless shots. She is also very mobile on her feet, capable of stepping out aggressively on screens. A nightmare for the opposition’s attack.

Why she has made history (or at least why she is in the process of doing so?)

If A’ja Wilson is already a living legend of the sport, it is because she has shattered statistical glass ceilings. Being the only player in history to win four WNBA MVP awards places her in a league of her own, above icons such as Lisa Leslie and Sheryl Swoopes.

Wilson has left her mark on the league through her consistently outstanding performances. She never takes a statistical break. Beyond the numbers, it is her aura that captivates. Charismatic and committed, she is the captain of a generation that has sent WNBA viewership soaring. She has proven that a centre can be the figurehead of a high-profile franchise, selling her own signature trainers. A’ja Wilson has raised the physical and technical standards of the sport to unprecedented heights.

The basketball that has the capital buzzing…
