Basketix Glossary : The Double-Double

Basketball is a sport of numbers. A statistical obsession. And among all the lines that fill up a score sheet, there’s one benchmark. A symbolic threshold that separates a good night from a true standout performance: the double-double.

What Is a Double-Double? (Definition for Beginners)

To put it simply and get straight to the point: basketball has five major statistical categories: points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. A player achieves a “double-double” when he reaches or exceeds the 10-point mark (the famous double digits) in two of these categories during a single game.

In 90% of cases, this is the bread and butter of the big men. They rack up at least 10 points and 10 rebounds. The work in the paint is done. Next comes the work of the point guards. Their mission? A double-double in points and assists. Proof that they can score while feeding their teammates with perfect passes.

But performance can go even further. Much further. A player who scores 10 points and makes 10 steals, or 10 points and 10 blocks, achieves a double-double of the rarest kind (the so-called raw defensive impact). Reaching the 10-point mark in two categories is the foundation of individual evaluation. It proves that a player has an overall impact on the game and is not just a one-dimensional scorer.

The Role of the Double-Double in Modern Basketball

Today, the double-double is commonplace in the NBA and the EuroLeague. It’s the barometer of basic efficiency. In the collective imagination, a starting big man who doesn’t average a double-double over a season hasn’t done his job. It’s the bare minimum for a superstar.

With the dramatic acceleration of the pace of play and the explosion of three-point shots, the number of possessions has skyrocketed. The result: more shots taken, more missed shots, and logically more rebounds and assists to dish out. The stats are through the roof, and the double-double has become the standard for a good starting performance.

It’s also the fuel for fantasy leagues and endless debates on social media. Want to be in the MVP conversation? Show me your consistency. A player who guarantees a double-double every night offers his coach a comprehensive insurance policy. In today’s strategy, a secured defensive rebound (the foundation of a center’s double-double) is the essential first step to launching a fast break.

Masters of the Genre: The Industrialization of Statistics

History is full of double-double machines.

Wilt Chamberlain holds the all-time career record (968), but we’re talking about an era when the statistics were mind-boggling.

In the modern era, Tim Duncan is the gold standard. “The Big Fundamental” recorded 841 career double-doubles. No frills, clinical efficiency, and Swiss-watch precision under the basket.

When it comes to point guards, John Stockton is in a league of his own. The legendary playmaker for the Utah Jazz recorded 714 double-doubles (points and assists). It’s an astonishing record for a guard, a testament to his legendary vision.

Today, the landscape has changed, and the kings are European. Nikola Jokic and Domantas Sabonis have literally made the extraordinary the norm. They don’t just score; they dominate the boards with impressive physical toughness. Sabonis, in particular, has made the double-double his absolute trademark with the Sacramento Kings, crushing the competition with a consistency and work ethic reminiscent of the legends of the 1970s and 1980s.

The Legendary Moment: Sabonis’s Crazy Streak

2023–2024 season. Domantas Sabonis recorded his 54th consecutive double-double with Sacramento. That night, he broke the modern-era record held by Kevin Love since 2011. But the Lithuanian didn’t stop there. He would end his incredible streak at 61 consecutive double-doubles. Sixty-one nights in a row of racking up at least 10 points and 10 rebounds against the world’s best athletes, battling every second in the paint. A display of total resilience.
